Emend privacy policy
Last updated: 8 November 2026
Emend is a PDF app for Android. It is built so that your documents stay on your device. This policy explains the small amount of information the app does send, and why.
Your documents
Emend opens, edits and saves your files on your device. It never uploads your documents, their contents, their names or where they are stored. A file leaves your device only when you choose to share it, for example by using Android’s share menu to send it to another app.
No account, no ads, no tracking
Emend has no sign-in and no user accounts. It shows no ads, contains no advertising or analytics libraries, and does not use the Android advertising ID.
Anonymous crash and error reports
So that we can find and fix problems, Emend sends anonymous reports when something goes wrong. A report can contain:
- the type of error and where in Emend’s code it happened (class and method names);
- counts of problems such as a file that couldn’t be opened or a save that failed, using fixed categories only (for example “damaged file” or “not enough space”);
- the app version, the Android version and the device model;
- a random identifier created when Emend is installed. It is not linked to you, your Google account or your device, and it changes if you clear Emend’s data.
Reports never contain your documents, text from them, file or folder names, passwords, signatures, search terms, form entries or anything else you type. Error messages from outside Emend’s own code are left out entirely, because they can contain such details.
Reports are sent over an encrypted connection (HTTPS) to a private error dashboard that only the developer can open. They are used only to fix bugs and improve stability, and are never sold or shared.
Feedback you send
If you use Settings › Send feedback, Emend sends the message you write, together with the Android version and device model, to the same private dashboard. You see exactly what will be sent before it goes. Please don’t include personal details you don’t want to share.
Purchases
If Emend offers a subscription, payment is handled entirely by Google Play. Emend checks with Google Play on your device whether a subscription is active; it never sees your payment details. Google’s privacy policy applies to purchases.
Permissions
- Camera: only when you scan a paper document. Pictures stay on your device.
- Notifications: to show progress of long jobs, such as saving a large file or reading aloud.
- Biometrics: only if you choose to lock signatures or other saved items behind your fingerprint or face.
- Internet: only for the crash reports and feedback described above, and for checking your subscription with Google Play.
Children
Emend is a general productivity app and is not directed at children.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted here with a new date.
